Corrections and Clarifications

>>Mr. P. Chidambaram is the Union Home Minister, as said in the first paragraph of a report (Madurai, March 2, 2009). The text even mentioned Mr. Chidambaram “taking charge of the Home Ministry recently”. But the report’s heading was “REPCO Bank plans to open 35 more branches, says Finance Minister”!

>>The expansion of NELP is New Exploration Licensing Policy. It was not given in the text of a report “NELP VIII to offer less blocks” (“Business” page, March 1, 2009).

>> A report “Christie’s auction house helps Chandigarh realise its worth” (North India, March 1, 2009) quoted the principal of the Chandigarh College of Arts as saying that the city is a mini architectural Makkah. A reader points out that the usage of the word “Makkah” is restricted to the holiest city of Islam in Saudi Arabia, where the Holy Kaabah is situated and where the annual Haj pilgrimage is made. For a place that many people like to visit for a particular reason, the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary gives the word “mecca”, with “m” in lower case. The reference made to Chandigarh as an architectural “Makkah” amounts to trivialisation of the significance of the holiest city of Islam.

>>Ever-watchful readers point out that the Chief Election Commissioner’s name is spelt as Gopalaswami in news reports, but the “Online and Off line” column (March 2, 2009) had it as Gopalaswamy. It should have been “i”, not “y”. The error is regretted.

>>An item “Tea factory bags award” (“Briefly” — Tamil Nadu, March 2, 2009) that said that the Pandalur Industrial Co-operative Tea Factory has bagged the Golden Leaf India Award 2009: Southern Tea Competition, did not specify its location. The factory is in Gudalur, Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu.
