Shot dead

Bissau(Guinea-Bissau): Renegade soldiers assassinated the President of Guinea-Bissau Joao Bernardo Vieira in his palace on Monday, hours after a bomb blast killed his rival, but the military said no coup was in progress in the fragile West African nation.

The military statement attributed President’s death to an “isolated” group of soldiers whom the military said it was hunting down. — AP
