SINGAPORE: The repatriation of 43 Indian workers, now in a detention camp in Malaysia, is likely later this week. All 43 would be sent to Chennai. It is not clear whether all of them belong to Tamil Nadu. Efforts are also under way to arrange the repatriation of eight other Indian workers. All 51 were said to have been asked by their common employer to continue working for over five months, without a valid permit, beyond the original contracted period of three years each. And, 43 among them were detained for suspected overstay. India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Ashok Kantha said the priorities in such cases were to ensure the repatriation of affected workers and the prompt payment of their dues by the local employers. Some sources said the Indian mission was ascertaining facts about the reported detention of 78 persons from Kerala for their alleged overstay.
