The Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, winding up the six-hour deliberations of the Export Promotion Council in New Delhi on March 2, said that an element of compulsion might have to be introduced if industry and trade did not “play the game” in stepping up exports. He said that the Government would give all reasonable incentives to industry in increasing the exports. If there was no improvement, “we may start with a scheme of compulsion for one or two commodities purely as a trial”, he said.
