NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand played out a quiet, uneventful draw with black pieces against Levon Aronian and found himself in the sole fifth spot after nine rounds of the eight-player Linares chess tournament at the Spanish city of Linares on Sunday. The Catalan encounter lasted 30 moves, same as the game between Vassily Ivanchuk and Teimour Radjabov, and left Anand with a tally of 4.5 points. Russia’s Alexander Grischuk (6) continued to lead after a quick 17-move draw with China’s Wang Yue. In the only decisive game of the day, Norwegian youngster Magnus Carlsen foxed Cuba’s Leinier Dominguez Perez in 54 movers after playing from the black side of Sicilian Dragon. The victory placed Carlsen alongside Ivanchuk and Aronian in the tied second spot at five points. The results (ninth round): Levon Aronian (Arm, 5) drew with Viswanathan Anand (4.5); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 5) drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 3.5); Leinier Dominguez Perez (Cub, 3.5) lost to Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 5); Wang Yue (Chn, 4.5) drew with Alexander Grischuk (Rus, 6).
