School dedicates book collection to village

KOZHIKODE: A handwritten book collection compiled by students of the Government Higher Secondary School, Kayanna, near here, was dedicated to the Kayanna grama panchayat at a programme held on February 27.

The project of setting up a library of hundred handwritten literary works — a dream initiative of the students — was launched during the 2008-‘09 academic year.

Students who won prizes for poetry and story writing at the district school level are among the contributors to the compilation says N.K. Preman, teacher, who guided the students. A special library would be set up to keep the collection.

Similar programmes to encourage the literary and creative talents of the students would be launched during the next academic year, he added.

Stories and poetry, essays and anecdotes are included in the handwritten works along with 200-odd biographies of senior personalities in the Kayanna grama panchayat.

Kayanna grama panchayat president K.P. Sheeba dedicated the book collection to the people of the village.

U.A. Khader, writer; M. Mohan, film director; Civic Chandran, social activist; Kalpetta Narayanan, writer; and V.T. Murali, musician, were among those who attended the programme.

‘Hridaya Thudipukal’, a collection of poems by Sajishna P.K., a class X student was released on the occasion. The school plans to organise a national-level programme of dedication soon too.
