CUTTACK: The Orissa High court on Tuesday directed the State Women and Child Development Deputy Secretary Dilip Kumar Behera to appear before the court in person on March 30 to clarify about the confusion over his earlier affidavit. Tuesday’s direction came in the wake of a petition filed by some 20 students of a deaf and dumb school in Baragarh district of the State seeking HC direction to open Class VIII in their school. The students representing through their parents have claimed that the State government, despite repeated pleas, is noncommittal to their demands. Adjudicating over the petition, the single-judge bench of Justice M.M. Das had earlier issued notice to State Women and Child Development department to file counters. Responding to the notice, the Deputy Secretary of the department had told the High Court that it was not possible for the government to open Class VIII in the school as the school currently teaching the students only up to Class III. However, a subsequent affidavit filed by the Sambalpur District Inspector of schools had stated that the concerned school teaches students up to Class VII and there is a longtime demand from the students to open Class VIII in the school. When two contrasting affidavits were received from two government agencies, the High Court expressing concern over the matter, ordered for a personal appearance of the Deputy Director of Women and Child Development department to say whether the facts mentioned in his affidavits are true or false.
