TN takes on Mumbai

Special Correspondent

AGARTALA: South Zone champion Tamil Nadu will take on West Zone No. 1 Mumbai in the all-India Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout one-day tournament here on Wednesday.

Leading Tamil Nadu’s charge will be S. Badrinath, one of the most prolific run-getters in domestic cricket. Tamil Nadu is likely to go into the game with seven batsmen and four bowlers.

Seven-four combination

“We always preferred seven-four combination, said captain R. Ashwin. Ashwin also felt that Mumbai’s bowling is a bit short on experience, which might help his team.

Mumbai will not have the services of Aviskar Salvi, W. Mota, and Ramesh Powar, owing to injury and other reasons.

Coach Praveen Amre said this Mumbai side is a mix of youth and experience.

“Nearly half a dozen boys are from the under-22 side and will depend on skipper Wasim Jaffer and fellow opener Ajinkya Rahane and veteran Amol Muzumdar for runs. Usman Malwi and Abhishek Nayar will lead a young bowling attack,” he said.

“Both teams will be under pressure.

“It all depends on how the teams perform in the last 10 overs. TN has done well so far and we are looking for a good contest,” the coach said.

At the MBB Stadium, last year’s runner-up Bengal will be up against Delhi on a pitch that looks more of a slow turner. The Akash Chopra-led side will miss the services of Shikhar Dhawan, who fractured a finger during the last match.

“We have done our home work well and looking forward to this match,” said L.R. Shukla, captain of Bengal.
