JD(S) demands reduction in bus fares

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: Members of the Udupi unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) staged a rasta roko in front of the taluk office here on Tuesday demanding reduction in fares of private buses and introduction of government bus services.

President of the JD(S) district unit Deviprasad Shetty said that though the Union Government had reduced the price of diesel, the private bus owners who operated buses within the district and to Mangalore, had not reduced fares. Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha had not bothered to call any meeting on the issue. “We want 40 per cent reduction in fares,” he said. Mr. Shetty said that Transport Minister R. Ashok had made grand announcements that government buses would be operated on the Udupi-Mangalore and Udupi-Karkala routes. But it had not been implemented.
