NEW DELHI: Through a notice to Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, environmentalists have inquired about the action taken in respect of the recent Delhi High Court order banning use of plastic in the Capital and also sought details of “challans” issued to violators. Decision welcomed“The majority of shop owners, residents and consumers have welcomed the decision of the Government and have voluntarily chosen not to supply, use or insist on plastic bags. The public at large is happy with the ban. However, there is a section of people who for vested interest or merely to defy the ban are circulating and encouraging use of plastic bags. This is defeating the objective for which the prohibition has been placed,” said environmentalist Vinod Kumar Jain. Insisting that necessary instructions be issued to all implementing officers, Mr. Jain said since the prohibition placed on plastic bags was in compliance with a court order, it became all the more important that the order was strictly complied with and a record maintained about the action taken by various officers assigned the job of enforcing the ban. Serious about ban“The Government needs to show that it is serious about implementing the prohibition and for that it is necessary that action for violating the prohibition is initiated by conducting random checks and imposing penalties as provided under the Environment Act. Any laxity shown at this stage would undo the good work that has been done till now,” said the notice.
