Court directive on autorickshaw permits

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday said that the State authorities need not issue autorickshaw permits till March 9 to those selected pursuant to a draw of lots conducted here on March 1.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian passed the interim order on a petition filed by the Madras Metro Auto Drivers Association, represented by its general secretary J. Seshasayanam.

The petitioner submitted that the State Transport Authority (STA) and the Joint Transport Commissioner (JTC)-cum-Regional Transport Authority, had no jurisdiction to select the names of applicants for grant of permits by way of a draw of lots. Conducting a draw was clearly void ab-initio, arbitrary and illegal. When the matter came up, notice was taken on behalf of the Home Secretary, STA and the JTC. Mr. Justice Ramasubramanian posted the matter for March 9.
