Three committees for monitoring Idukki package

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to form three high-level committees to implement the Idukki package, recommended by the M.S. Swaminathan Commission, to rejuvenate agriculture in Idukki district.

Briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions, Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said that he would chair the Idukki Aishwarya Committee (which is to decide on policy issues, provide guidance and monitor implementation). The Chief Secretary would head a ‘karma samithi’ and the Agriculture Production Commissioner would lead a task implementation committee.

(The karma samithi will coordinate with commodity boards and government institutions for proper project implementation while the third committee will coordinate and monitor monthly activities and oversee implementation.)

The Chief Minister said that a project office would be opened in Idukki for implementing the package. The Rs.1,200-crore package, with Central assistance of nearly Rs.765 crore, is aimed at addressing the problems of cash crops such as tea and pepper and environmental issues.
