This Day That Age
Nearly 80 librarians from universities and colleges in the country gathered in New Delhi on March 4 to discuss problems connected with libraries at a seminar organised by the University Grants Commission. The four-day seminar on “Work flow in university and college libraries,” was inaugurated by Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, Chairman of U.G.C. The Director of the Seminar is Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the well-known authority on library science. Mr. Deshmukh said that ideally speaking a college with a strength of about 1,000 students should have a library with an average of at least 50 volumes per student, making a total of 50,000 and that a university should have at least double that number, namely 100,000. Besides, there was the question of yearly addition to libraries if they were to be up to date and of the maximum utility to teachers, researchers and students. These standards, Mr. Deshmukh said, had not been attained in many colleges and universities in India.
