KOLKATA: Ugandan recruit Alex Katete, who represented George Telegraph SC in the second division I-League football tournament, died of heart attack in Silchar (Assam) on Tuesday. The body of the 25-year-old striker arrived here on Wednesday evening as the club authorities made arrangements to send it to its family in Kampala. “It is extremely heartrending to lose a player in such a way. He was a good player which was evident in his performance in the opening match,” said George Telegraph President Subrata Dutta. Katete converted a penalty for his team’s only goal in its 1-2 defeat against Lajong SC in its Group ‘A’ clash on Monday. He returned to the team hotel with the other players and complained of chest pain in the early hours of Tuesday. He reportedly breathed his last on the way to the hospital. The autopsy revealed that the player had suffered a massive heart attack. “Everything was over before he could reach the hospital,” Mr. Dutta said. “The player was cleared in the mandatory medical test before the tournament. It cannot be ascertained if he was suffering from any ailment previously as he was not carrying any medical records,” he added.
“We have been approached by a person who will take Alex’s body to his family in Uganda. We are in the process of getting the mandatory clearances from the Ugandan embassy in Delhi and hope to get everything done in a couple of days,” Mr. Dutta said. — Principal Correspondent
