Seminar on combating global terrorism held at Madras Christian College

TAMBARAM: A day-long seminar on combating global terrorism was held at Madras Christian College here on Wednesday, as part of a programme to create awareness among the student community of incidents of largescale violence across the world and also the need and methods to combat them.

The seminar was organised by the Students for Harmony, a global movement for universal harmony since 1995. The seminar was addressed by academicians and experts in philosophy, literature, public administration, sociology and political science.

Kala, film choreographer, in her speech, said individuals should look into their own cultures for inspiration for world peace. Every culture and religion preached love and care for others and it was essential for sustaining the world, she added.

College principal V.J. Philip said terrorism cannot be allowed to become a clash of civilisations that people should get into details to eliminate violence in total.

Vested interests

Faizur Rahaman of Harmony India, said there were vested interests that created communal tensions among citizens and they should not be allowed to have their final say and added “citizen alertness” alone could end conflicts in society. Organisers said over 500 students from different departments of MCC participated in the seminar. They were also planning to organise world food, music, film, art and literary festivals to bring conflicting regions together for global peace.
