Walkathon on March 7

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: United Way of Bengaluru (UWB), a volunteer-led, non-profit organisation, has organised a walkathon on March 7 to raise funds to conduct 1,000 free cataract operations.

Vivek Nagarakatti, chairman of UWB, said the operations would be performed on those from weaker sections of society and would be implemented through the Sankara Eye Hospital. He said that volunteers from at least 50 companies were expected to participate in the walkathon.

Ashwini Kumar, executive director of UWB, said the organisation was committed to raising funds to part-finance open-heart surgeries for 100 poor children from government schools at Manipal Hospitals. The organisation, in partnership with a social technology firm, has implemented vaccination alert system at Manipal Hospital, through which advance vaccination alerts are sent via SMS or email to mothers.
