Militants demand Rs. 2 crore

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: Suspected militants of the anti-talks faction of the militant National Democratic Front of Boroland have demanded a ransom of Rs. 2 crore for the release of two minor sons of a tea garden manager of northern Assam’s Sonitpur district abducted at gun point on Tuesday.

Police are yet to trace the whereabouts of the two children — Karan Sehra (14) and Barun Sehra (9) — of Parminder Singh Sehra of the Monmohinpur tea garden under Dhekiajuli police station. The police suspected the abduction to be the handiwork of the Ranjan Daimari-led faction.

Principal Secretary (Home) Subhash Ch. Das told The Hindu that four armed youth, who had come in a van, abducted the boys while they were on way to the Misamari Army School. Karan is a student of class VII and Barun is in class IV.

The incident took place barely 500 metres from the garden manager’s bungalow and shortly after the two started for their school at 6.30 a.m. in their father’s car.

Mr. Das said the abductors reportedly established contact with the boys’ family and conveyed their ransom demand.
