Sarojini Varadappan felicitated

CHENNAI: A function to felicitate social worker Sarojini Varadappan saw a convergence of personalities from various fields highlighting her contributions for the development of women.

The meeting, got up on her being conferred with the Padma Bhushan this year, was organised by over 40 voluntary organisations, spearheaded by the Women’s Indian Association, here on Wednesday.

Presiding over the event, former Judge of the Supreme Court S.Mohan recalled the projects initiated during Ms. Varadappan’s tenure as Chairman of Social Welfare Board and lauded her social dedication. Calling her an exemplary figure, he said Ms.Varadappan inspired quite a number of voluntary organisations to take up innovative projects.

Offering felicitations, the Managing Director of The Hindu N.Murali said Ms.Varadappan’s life was a “saga of dedication and sacrifice.” Her service had profound impact on social organisations and egged them on to work with greater commitment. Tracing her social work that spanned nearly seven decades, he said Ms. Varadappan’s humility and hardwork helped her scale greater heights. “She made a mark in all her social activities with her indomitable spirit of selflessness,” he said.

Chairman of Sakthi Group of Companies N. Mahalingam, Adyar Cancer Institute chairman V. Shantha, former bureaucrat V. Sundaram, educationist Meena Muthiah, Stanley Medical College professor Sudha Seshayyan and Indian Council for Child Welfare chairman Andal Damodaran commended Ms. Varadappan for her untiring interest in supporting and empowering the downtrodden.

Ms. Varadappan, in her acceptance speech, said women’s organisations made tremendous contribution in lobbying the government for protecting women’s rights. Voluntary and non-governmental organisations have been lending a helping hand for the government in improving education and supporting destitutes. She expressed optimism that the organisations sustain their social commitment and inspire every person in the country to accept social responsibility.
