Homecoming: Oscar winner Resul Pookutty arrives with his son Rayan at the international airport in the city on Friday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Resul Pookutty deserved a hero’s welcome and got one too. Holding four-year-old son Rayan, a beaming Resul stepped out of the domestic terminal of the international airport here around 1.30 p.m. along with Minister for Cultural Affairs M.A. Baby.

The sound engineer, who bagged the Oscar for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ recently, was mobbed at the airport. Even his siblings and close relatives, who had been waiting patiently near the entrance to receive him, could not come near him. They were seen pleading with the public to let them speak to him.

The police threw a protective ring around Resul and Mr. Baby and brought them out. In the commotion, Rayan went missing. The police soon found him and put him in the car.

Song for the mood

Minutes before the flight carrying Resul landed at the airport, a van rolled in to the premises announcing ‘Resulee nin varavaiye…’ on the lines of the song ‘Resulee nin kanivale…’ sung by K.J. Yesudas in the film “Sanchari’ in 1981. Many came with floral bouquets. Banners, with the coveted trophy printed on them, screamed out greetings. The airport was abuzz with percussion ensemble and slogans of ‘Jai Ho’.

Students of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Manacaud, lined up with placards greeting the Oscar winner.

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar, Minister for Agriculture Mulakkara Retnakaran, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran, Minister for Forest Benoy Viswom, Panniyan Ravindran, MP, V. Sivan Kutty, V. Surendran Pillai, legislators, were present to receive Resul.

The film fraternity was represented in the airport by Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy K.R. Mohan, actor Madhupal and film producer Suresh Kumar.

Later, Resul was taken in a motorcade from the airport via Shanghumughom and Chakka to VJT Hall, the venue of the civic reception. Scores of DYFI activists led the motorcade in motorcycles. Resul’s wife, Babin Shadiya, and his one-year-old daughter Salna proceeded in another car.
