Dilemma sparks a vaccination drive

Staff Reporter

Cow dies of suspected rabies

Those who drank its milk are being given shots

Thiruvananthapuram: The district health administration has strengthened preventive measures including vaccination and awareness programmes at Aanakudy in Vamanapuram after a cow in the locality died following suspected rabies.

A team of Health Department officials visited Aanakudy on Thursday and administered the first dose of prophylaxis rabies vaccination to 47 persons who claimed that they had consumed the said cow’s milk.

It is extremely rare that rabies can spread through cow’s milk and as rabies virus is heat-sensitive, it would have been destroyed when the milk is boiled.

Two more doses

However, rather than kick up a controversy the district health administration decided to vaccinate everyone.

Two more doses of anti-rabies vaccination will be given on March 8 and March 12 to all those who were vaccinated in the first round.

All arrangements for this have been made by the district health administration in coordination with the grama panchayat. The health workers at Aanakudy primary health centre also visited houses.
