Micro observers to monitor sensitive booths

Staff Reporter

For Parliamentary polls in Theni district

GETTING READY: Collector P. Muthuveeran, second from left, checking an EVM in Theni on Saturday.

THENI: For the first time, micro-observers will be deputed in sensitive polling stations in the district for the Parliamentary polls to ensure free and fair elections.

District election office has identified 230 micro observers, all central government employees and bank staff, according to Collector P. Muthuveeran.

Talking to press persons here on Saturday, he said these micro-observers will sit in these sensitive stations and observe the polls.

Later, they will submit the report on conduct of poll and untoward incident, if any, directly to the central election observer of this constituency.

The police administration will pencil vulnerability mapping in all Assembly segments of the constituency and mark sensitive areas and voter segments vulnerable to threat and intimidation shortly.

A total of 898 polling stations, including 459 in rural and 439 in urban areas, were kept ready.

About 706 polling stations have up to 1,000 voters and 192 polling stations have more than 1,000 voters. Three auxiliary polling stations have been set up near the existing ones that have more than 1,200 voters.

“Kammavar Sangam polytechnic college at Koduvilarpatti is the counting centre.”

Nominations will be accepted from April 17 and the last date for submission of nominations is April 24.

Scrutiny will take place the next day and the last date for withdrawal is April 27.

Polling will be held on May 13 and counting on May 16. All election work will be completed by May 28.

Over 4,380 presiding and polling officers will be deputed for the election duty. Central government, banks and other public sector employees will also be roped in. Only 50 per cent of bank staff will be utilised for election work to facilitate smooth functioning of banks.

All election guidelines should be strictly followed by the candidates and political parties, advised Mr. Muthuveeran. Defacing walls of government and public sector buildings will be an offence. Graffiti and sticking bills on private buildings without prior permission of the building owners will also be treated as violence, he added.

The Collector appealed to political parties and voters to extend full cooperation in conducting free and fair poll.

Later, he checked EVMs kept at the taluk office campus. All EVMs will be ready within 10 days.
