DAVANGERE: Eight-six auxiliary polling booths have been set up in Davangere Lok Sahba constituency in the wake of directions by the Election Commission that all voters be given easy access to polling stations. A voter should not have to travel more than 1.5 km to reach a booth.

Deputy Commissioner K. Amaranarayana told presspersons here on Saturday that five auxiliary polling stations had been set up in Jagalur, 10 in Harpanahalli, nine in Harihar, 13 in Davangere North, 14 in Davangere South, two in Mayakonda, six in Chennagiri and 27 in Honnali. With the addition of the 86 polling booths, the number of stations in the constituency has gone up to 1,652.

There are 13,07,284 voters in the constituency: 6,72,413 men and 6,34,871 women.

The Deputy Commissioner said that of the total 13,07,284 voters, 9,97,159 had been given voter identity cards while the rest would be covered soon. Over 40 mobile teams had been formed to distribute cards to people in the all eight Assembly segments in the district.

Mr. Amaranarayana said a voter facilitation centre had been set up on the Davangere City Corporation premises to enable people to have their names included in the voters’ list. Voters whose names were wrongly spelt could have them corrected at the centre. Similarly, voter facilitation centres would start functioning at all taluk headquarters from Sunday, he said.

‘Keep close watch’

He urged people to keep a close watch and report to the district electoral authorities instances of misconduct by political parties or their representatives. The names of informers would be kept confidential, he said. Informants would be rewarded in case the information was found to be true, he said.

A team of officials from Bharat Electronics Ltd. is expected here on Sunday to inspect all electronic voting machines.
