Rail line hit by funds squeeze

Staff Reporter

KARUR: Work on the new broad gauge railway line between Karur and Salem is proceeding at a snail’s pace. Poor governmental support by way of inadequate funds allocation, impediments ranging from land acquisition to court cases, construction of a major bridge across the Cauvery are some of the factors that have contributed to the stunted progress of the project.

Conceding the long-pending demand of the people of the region, a new BG line between Karur and Salem through Namakkal and Rasipuram was sanctioned in 1996-97. The 85-km- line was then estimated to cost Rs. 136 crore.

Stations were to be constructed at Mallur, Rasipuram, Puduchatram, Namakkal, Lathuvadi, Mohanur and Vangal. The new line would reduce the distance between Salem and Karur by 45 km.

There is a high potential for freight traffic in the sector for sago, starch, grains, handlooms and textile products, poultry feed and the importance of Namakkal as a business centre add to the significance of the project. During 1997-98, Rs. 4.76 crore was spent on the project. The grant in the 1998-99 budget was Rs. 15 crore.

In February 2003, the cost worked out to Rs. 229.38 crore, while expenditure incurred till that period was Rs. 53.64 crore. The provision during 2003-04 was Rs. 15.69 crore.

The project envisages construction of a new bridge across the Cauvery, linking Mohanur in Namakkal district with Vangal in Karur district.

But after all these years one could see just pillars rising from the river bed with only two deck slabs having been launched.

Earthwork has been done covering a major portion in Karur district till Vangal and in several other places in Namakkal and Salem districts. Official sources said that land acquisition covering the 13 km-stretch of the line in Karur district has been completed.

Railway officials claimed that land acquisition was completed for the entire stretch and that the next phase of work would gather pace.
