KARUR: Amplifying the voice of the voiceless, socially excluded sections of the society, a convention for living rights of the socially excluded people organised here on Friday called for governmental assistance to the HIV affected, destitutes, widows, dalits and other affected in various walks of life to help them lead a normal life. ConferenceThe regional conference that drew more than 150 delegates from Karur, Dindigul, Erode, Namakkal and Dharmapuri districts passed a resolution seeking free bus passes for the HIV affected, daycare centres for their children, governmental aid for the HIV affected on the lines of the physically challenged, free ration including rice for their families, ensuring that the ramps for the benefit of physically challenged were in place in public places, separate ward for the mentally ill in the government headquarters hospitals in each district, sanctioning government jobs for all widows taking into account social realities and their educational qualification, according priority to wards of widows in educational institutions, establishing separate courts to try atrocities against the dalits, ensuring that the maternity assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries, sanctioning social security aid to destitute women and those deserted by their husbands, among other things. Karur Revenue Divisional Officer K. Jayaraman presided over the regional conference as part of the project supported by the Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association and Christian Aid Appeal Fund. Chilling accountMarginalised sections of the society including those representing the people living with AIDS/HIV, physically challenged, senior citizens, widows and destitute women related their experience living amidst the larger society. They recounted chilling accounts of deprivation, neglect and apathy that had left indelible marks on their persona. Overcoming the social stigma was a much more difficult task than carrying on with the problem they all said as one. Project Coordinator of TNVHA K. Christopher detailed the scope of the project and the conference, while Executive Director of SIDAR, T.N. Shethulinkhan explained the work being undertaken to ameliorate the suffering of the intended sections of society. District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer T. Srinivasan, District Social Welfare Officer M. Rajeswari, president of the District Association for People Living with HIV K. Padmavathy, president of the District Weaving and Knitting Factory owners Association P. Ramasamy, Director, UPKAR DFC, Darapuram, Daulatbi Fakrudeen, and others spoke. K. Srinidhi gave a thematic bharatanatyam presentation on health aspects. She was conferred with the title “Kalai Kavya” on the occasion in recognition of her display of multifarious talent in fine arts and music.
