LOSING THEIR WAY: A herd of five wild elephants that strayed into a ravine at Kanuvai, near Coimbatore, on Saturday.
Coimbatore: Villagers in and around Kanuvai and Thadagam on Saturday made a beeline for a check dam to have a look at a herd of five wild elephants that got stuck in a ravine in an area abutting the reserve forest that forms part of the Western Ghats.
Following information about the herd that got holed up in a check dam ravine, Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Circle, R. Kannan and District Forest Officer I. Anwardeen deputed a team of officials led by Forest Veterinarian N.S. Manoharan and Range Officer N. Panneerselvam.
The herd remained in the ravine along the check dam throughout the day.
It comprised a male elephant and a female elephant and three sub-adults or calves.
With the crowd of curious onlookers swelling, the officials had a tough time planning the operation to put the herd back on its migratory track.
The officials decided to take up the operation after dusk.
Powerful searchlights and anti-depredation squad personnel have been drafted from various ranges to ensure that the herd is put back in its habitat by midnight or early Sunday morning. Monitoring teams have been positioned on the hillock.
