Parties trying to woo voters with goodies, says Sarma ‘Voter lists will be updated till the filing of nominations’
Sage COUNSEL: Forum for Better Visakha convener E.A.S. Sarma explaining the value of voting to women who submitted forms for registration of their names at Swarnabharati indoor stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: As part of `Election Watch’ campaign, the Forum for Better Visakha on Sunday explained to women voters that they should not vote those who try to win by offering money, liquor and other allurements. Forum convener and former IAS officer E.A.S. Sarma and others interacted with women who came to register their names at Swarna Bharati indoor stadium after finding it missing in the draft rolls and told them to elect only good people. He found fault with parties for their attempts to influence the voters with goodies on the eve of elections. Mr. Sarma told the prospective voters “please do not allow the candidates or their campaign managers to bribe you as anyone who gets elected on the basis of corrupt practices will not be committed to serve you.” He told them not to allow liquor, cash and other inducements in return of vote as the value of vote was far higher than all such inducements put together. “Remember that you are entrusting your future to the candidate to whom you give your vote. He/she should be worthy of your precious vote,” he stated. Mr. Sarma said irrespective of the political party to which a candidate was representing, each citizen should cast his/her vote in favour of a person who had already established credentials by doing genuine work for the area/known for his/her honesty and dedication. “This alone will strengthen our democracy,” he remarked. He also said that the electoral rolls would be continuously updated till the last date for filing of nominations – April 4 and 16 – depending on the polling schedule of an area. Those who find their names missing should contact the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer concerned as soon as possible and file application in Form 6. A passport size photo, proof of identity and residence along with photocopy of ration card should be submitted along with the form. As part of voter awareness, he said if the address shown in the electoral roll was incorrect, the persons concerned should submit an application in Form 8 with proof of residence. If the name is not included for the reason that the person has shifted his/her residence fromone area to another, her/she can apply for inclusion in the roll by applying in Form 8A. Dr. Santamma, president, Lions Club of Vizianagaram, R. Saraswati of Priyanka SC Self-Help Group, Visakhapatnam and others were present.
