dated March 10, 1959: Revolt in Northern Iraq

Reports of an army-led revolt in oil-rich northern Iraq against the eight-month-old regime of Major-General Abdul Karim Kassem came from Cairo and Damascus on March 8. Baghdad Radio claimed on March 9 that pro-Government troops had killed Colonel Abdul Wahab Shawwaf, leader of the revolt, after Air Force planes had bombed his head-quarters in Mosul. The radio report a few hours after a previous claim that Colonel Shawwaf was fleeing towards the Syrian border, 100 miles from Mosul, said troops and civilians in Mosul were hailing the Government of Major-General Abdul Karim Kassem. But the rebel radio at Mosul denied Baghdad Radio claims that Government troops controlled Mosul. It said the rebels were winning, and that General Kassem’s nerve had broken.
