dated March 10, 1959: Kalakshetra festival

An Art Festival by Kalakshetra artistes will be presented by the Madras Natya Sangh from March 11 to March 15 at the Congress Grounds Theatre, Teynampet. It will include “Sita Swayamvaram”, Kutrala Kuravanji, Kathakali, “Kumarasambhavam” and “Usha Parinayam”, a dance-drama in the Melattur Bhagavata Mela Nataka tradition. In a talk with pressmen on March 9, Srimathi Rukmini Devi said that “Usha Parinayam” was taken from the Bhagavata Mela Natakas, which were first performed in Melattur. The music was composed by Sri Venkatarama Sastri of Melattur, who was an elder contemporary of Sri Thyagaraja.
