Corrections and clarifications

* * A sentence in the first paragraph of “Another success for missile shield” (Editorial, March 9, 2009) was “… It was the third test of the ballistic missile defence shield being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.” A few readers said that it was the fourth ballistic missile test, with the third having been on January 20, 2009. The detail in the Editorial is right. The missile test (that failed) on January 20, 2009, was of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, and not of the ballistic missile defence system.

* * A tabular column titled “Some prominent air accidents in Bangalore” (Karnataka, March 7, 2009) had the entry “March 9, 2009: Three Indian Air Force test pilots were killed near Bidadi when the prototype aircraft of the Saras, the first indigenously designed and manufactured passenger aircraft, crashed ....” The date should have been March 6, 2009.

* * Referring to a PTI item “Irom Sharmila freed” (“Briefly”, March 8, 2009, page 1) and a related standalone PTI picture “Iron lady” (March 8, 2009) that said Irom Chanu Sharmila is on a fast for the past nine years, a few readers wondered whether the detail was right. We repeat the clarification we had issued on October 12, 2006: “… The article ‘Does anybody care about Manipur’ (Op-Ed, October 10, 2006) gives the details: ‘Ms. Sharmila has been on hunger strike demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act [in force in Manipur]. Unlike other hunger strikers, she has not allowed even a drop of water to cross her lips all this while. She cleans her teeth with cotton and not water and has been kept alive through force-feeding via a nasal drip five times a day ....’”

* * In a cricket report “Johnson has South Africa on the mat” (“Sport”, March 8, 2009), the first paragraph said Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson took three wickets in his first over and forced South African captain Graeme Smith to retire hurt on the second day of the second Test at Kingsmead on Saturday. He had taken only two wickets in his first over.

The ninth paragraph was right in saying that Jacques Kallis, struck on the jaw by a bouncer from Johnson and retired hurt on 22, came back to bat but was dismissed by McDonald for the same score. The scoreboard recorded it as Kallis (retired hurt).

* * A cricket report “India meets Pakistan” (“Sport”, March 7, 2009) — on the ICC women’s World Cup — should have said that India plays England on March 10, and not Australia, as reported in the early editions.

* * The second paragraph of a cricket report “TN geared up to meet U.P.’s challenge” (“Sport”, March 6, 2009) — on the all-India Vijay Hazare Trophy — said that Tamil Nadu won all its zonal matches with bonus points. Tamil Nadu finished first with 24 points (from five matches), losing out on the bonus point in the match against Goa.
