NEW DELHI: Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL), known for manufacturing contraceptives and other healthcare products, has renamed itself HLL Lifecare Ltd. Established as a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1966, HLL has been declared a Mini Ratna. According to the chairman and managing director of HLL, M. Ayyappan, the company’s transformation has been total — having started as a small condom packing unit to condom manufacturer Nirodh to an organisation manufacturing the widest range of contraceptives in the world. “This journey of transformation and widening of operational areas has prompted the adoption of the new name — HLL Lifecare Limited,” he said. HLL’s tryst with the nation’s family planning programme began on April 5, 1965, with the commencement of operations at its Peroorkada facility in Thiruvananthapuram, built with Japanese collaboration with an annual installed capacity to produce 144 million condoms. At present, the annual capacity is a staggering 1,316 billion condoms in five units.
