Karunanidhi criticises fast
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Criticising the day-long fast undertaken by AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Monday that it was clear from her speech that the AIADMK’s anger was only against him and not the Sri Lankan government, its army or the Centre.
In a statement here, he said when the government launched a fund collection drive, it was done in a transparent manner and only cheques were accepted. Comparing the mode of collection at the AIADMK fast venue – through a collection box – Mr. Karunanidhi said when the government collected funds, the accounts were made public and the Finance Department was in-charge of the collected amount.
On Ms. Jayalalithaa’s comments about ongoing war in Sri Lanka, Mr. Karunanidhi said that in October, she had said that only the Sri Lankan government had the power to end the war. The Indian government did not have this power. He recalled that she had stated that if India interfered in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka, then other countries might also do the same in India. This would pose a challenge to India’s sovereignty.
