dated March 11, 1959: Soviet Puppet theatre

Puppets in Moghul costumes, acting more realistically than even human beings carried the hearts of Madras citizens on March 10, when the Moscow State Central Puppet Theatre presented their inaugural show at the Annamalai Manram. The well-known “Arabian Nights” story, “Alladin and the Magic Lamp”, was the theme of the 90-minute show every second of which made an indelible impression on the audience. Those who witnessed the show could never have imagined before that dolls could be made to express with clarity and spontaneity human emotions like love and and heroism. The villainous look of the puppet, which played the role of the Grand Wazir, and the sword-fighting scene made one forget that it was after all dolls that acted. The beautiful setting of the scenes and the life-like horses, elephant and lion in dolls added to the effect. At the end of the show, Mr. Sergei Obraztsov, Leader of Soviet Puppeteers, and Director of the Theatre, was honoured by the South Indian Artistes’ Association. A gold ring was presented to him by Mr. M.G. Ramachandran.
