Akash Passey BANGALORE: Repeat orders of over 150 inter-city buses by State road transport corporations have prompted Volvo Buses India to increase production capacity by 25 per cent at its plant here. Volvo sold 440 units in 2008 and has a capacity for up to 1,000 buses annually. Company Managing Director Akash Passey told reporters here on Tuesday that the enhanced capacity was to meet both current orders and emerging need for modern city buses. The States that had now placed orders include Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Talks were on with transport departments in 40 cities about orders for city buses, he added. The Union Government’s stimulus package had a component to fund States to upgrade their bus rapid transit systems. Volvo has launched its Bus Consultancy, aimed mainly at State transport undertakings that wished to upgrade their fleets for both city and inter-city operations, Mr. Passey said. The consultancy would have experts worked with the company in Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, the U.K. and Sweden.
