HYDERABAD: The national rowing camp, organised by Rowing Federation of India as part of the preparations for the 2010 Asian Games, has commenced at the AP Rowing Academy (Hussain Sagar Lake) here with 51 rowers from across the country attending it, according to C.P.S. Deo, president of RFI. Deo told the media that the camp was being held with Dronacharya Ismail Baig supervising the preparations along with a team of assistant coaches. The campers have been drawn from Asian Games and the Asian Championship medallists in 2008 and 2009 and also the national championships. The RFI chief said that the camp has two rowers who are Arjuna Awardees, three Olympians, five Asian Games medallists and also some Asian Championship medallists. The camp was being attended by 37 men and 14 women rowers. “The RFI has drawn up a two-year plan as part of the Long Term Development Programme and submitted it to the Sports Authority of India. The aim is to get a rich haul of medals in the next Asian Games,” Deo said. “The selected team of men, women and juniors will also take part in the training-cum-exposure trip to Europe as part of the programme,” he added. A similar coaching camp is being held in Pune, under the aegis of Corps of Engineers Rowing Association (CERA), for second-rung rowers which would act as a feeder for the main camp here, the RFI president added. Vikas Raj, SAAP VC & MD, who formally inaugurated the camp, assured complete support to the efforts and hoped that the rowers would win more laurels in the coming years at the highest level. Bhavan’s winsBhavan’s Vivekananda College (Sainikpuri) won the Osmania University inter-college cricket tournament for the Ranga Reddy Trophy defeating SP College by 82 runs in the final here. Dr. Y. Ashok, Principal, Bhavan’s College, gave away the prizes. The scores: ADP India 123 for nine (Anoop 34) bt GE Money Services 93 (Santosh Thakur 31, Rakesh four for 12). Kun United 117 for seven (Manoj 40, P. Manoj 30) lost to The Hindu 118 for four (Dixit 48). Cognizant 127 (Ravi Krishna 39, Niranjan three for 30) lost to Karvy 128 for five (Sanjeev 44, Ravi Krishna three for 16).
