Israel stuns Sweden

MALMO: Israel defied violent demonstrations as well as a virtually empty stadium to come from behind and beat Sweden 3-2 in a Davis Cup cliff-hanger on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals for only the second time.

Harel Levy sealed the tie by beating Andreas Vinciguerra 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 after Dudi Sela had pulled Israel level by beating Thomas Johansson 3-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Levy, ranked No. 241 in the world, has never lost a five-set match and has now extended his winning record to 5-0.

Sunday’s defeat represented the first time in Sweden’s 84-year Davis Cup history that it had lost a tie from 2-1 up.

USA beats Switzerland

Meanwhile, in Birmingham (Alabama), the United States swamped Switzerland 4-1 with Andy Roddick beating Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and James Blake putting it past Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 7-6(6). — Agencies
