Co-operative spinning mill employees’ fast-unto-death enters second day

Pressing for charter demands: Workers of Uthangarai Co-operative Spinning Mills staging indefinite fast from Monday near the Anna Statue in Uthangarai on Tuesday. —

UTHANGARAI: The fast observed by the employees of the Krishnagiri District Co-operative Spinning Mill entered second day on Tuesday. About 275 employees were on fast before the Anna statue on Four Road junction in Uthangarai on Monday demanding immediate disbursal of three months salary.

State deputy secretary of the Spinning Mills Federation R. Baladandayuthapani told The Hindu that the mill was running under loss from 1984.

The Government did not offset the subsidy for supply of yarn to the mills was the reason for the loss for the past 25 years.

The employees also demanded immediate disbursal of three months salary from December, 2008, appointment of an administrative official in the rank of District Revenue Officer for the mill from the government.

They also demanded that the government should stand as guarantor for the National Co-operative Development Corporation to get loan for rehabilitation of the mill.

The government should solicit immediate remittance of provident fund amount from the salary of the employees to the PF, remittance to the LIC, co-operative thrift and co-operative society and Post Office savings account etc.

The other demands include immediate disbursal of terminal benefits to the employees who have retired, died and on VRS etc.

The fast was presided over by the K. Duraisamy, president of the LLF. K.E. Krishnamoorthy, Dharmapuri District Secretary, AIADMK, S. Ashokan, District Deputy Secretary, VCK, D. Ravindran, District Secretary CPM, G. Sekar, CITU, State Secretary and other leader participated.

P. Dilli Babu, Harur MLA, participated in the strike and spoke in support of the employees. The workers were on strike from February 25.
