Move to create awareness of hygiene among vendors

Staff Reporter

400 National Service Scheme students from city colleges cleaned the market premises

CHENNAI: A complaint cell opened early this year at the Koyambedu wholesale market by the Market Management Committee (MMC) has been receiving several calls pertaining to irregular garbage clearance and poor streetlight facility in and around the area.

An official of the MMC said the helpline, 65151692, launched in January, was receiving at least five calls every day pertaining to civic problems, including traffic pile up and poor sanitation. A register was also being maintained to receive complaints of vendors and visitors to the market.

In a bid to create awareness of maintaining clean environment among the vendors , an awareness campaign was launched on Saturday. Chief administrative officer of MMC, C.N. Maheswaran, said nearly 400 National Service Scheme students from various city colleges were involved in the campaign aimed at creating awareness of the need to make the market and surroundings hygienic.

Besides distributing pamphlets to the vendors and the customers, the students also cleaned the market premises. The official said that about 150 tonnes of garbage was generated every day in the market, which accommodates nearly 3,150 shops across three sections.

The vendors and the visitors were requested not to litter the market. Similar campaigns would be organised from June, the official said.

Vegetable prices online

Consumers now have the facility to check the wholesale price of vegetables online as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, which controls the market, has begun hosting the prices on its website, www.cmda.gov.in. The wholesale price range of at least 16 vegetables is available online. The facility would help residents compare it with retail cost, a MMC official said.
