Hypertension and the kidney

The kidney is both a cause and a victim of hypertension. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes for progressive kidney damage, next only to diabetes. Prompt evaluation and proper treatment of hypertension leads to a predictable and definite prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The incidence of CKD is on the rise in all countries especially in developing countries like ours. This will lead to a large number of patients requiring dialysis and transplantation, if it is not identified and treated early. The aim of ‘World Kidney Day” is to create an awareness both amongst the public and Doctors about the need for early identification of CKD among hypertensives and diabetics, so that effective preventive measures could be initiated and the morbidity and mortality associated with progressive CKD could be arrested. This year’s theme for ‘World Kidney Day’ is ‘Keep Pressure Down’- which stresses and highlights the importance of blood pressure control in preventing CKD and it’s sequelae.

The combination of CKD and high BP is a major public health issue; because of the costly treatments needed for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). A few rupees spent on prevention will save thousands of rupees later both for the individual and Public Health providers.
