Protest against delay in maize procurement

Staff Correspondent

Deploy more staff and hamalis at centres: farmers

DAVANGERE: Farmers of Bada, Honnuru and other surrounding villages in Davangere staged “rasta roko” on the BIET road here on Thursday protesting against “inordinate delay” in maize procurement.

The farmers said that there had been “inordinate delay” in procurement of maize owing to shortage of staff and hamalis at maize procurement centres. They demanded that the district administration deploy more staff members at the centres to speed up the procurement process.

The farmers said that they had hired tractors and trucks to bring the produce from their villages to the procurement centres. They would have to spend a lot of money on paying rent for the vehicles if they were made to wait with the crop for over eight days.

They urged the district administration to deploy more staff members and hamalis at the centres to speed up the procurement process and help farmers to return to their villages early.

Several truckloads of maize got wet in Wednesday’s rain, they said and added that the procurement centre staff were refusing to purchase the damp produce.

The farmers also demanded that the district administration extend the procurement process by 15 days.
