Need for database on quakes
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The five-day national programme on capacity building for architects in earthquake risk management (NPCBAERM) organised by MEASI Academy of Architecture was inaugurated by noted architect C.N. Ragavendran on Thursday.
Mr. Ragavendran, who designed the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Tidel Park and many other landmarks, stressed the need for creating database on earthquakes and other natural disasters as had been done in Japan.
He also recalled the indigenous construction methods using bamboos in the North-Eastern regions reduced the impact of earthquakes. These constructions provided adequate time for evacuation, he added.
Mohamed Khalid, coordinator, NPCBAERM, said the objective of the training programme was to ensure seismically safer habitats by training the architects in earthquake safety.
Dean of MEASI Academy N. Sachithanandan, head of the department Kesavalu and Prof. Altaf Ahmed participated in the programme.
