Thiruvananthapuram: Malaria seems to have re-surfaced in the district, with five cases being reported from Valiathura coastal area, one of the areas which has always been vulnerable to the disease. There has not been a sudden increase in the total number of malaria cases reported this year when compared to previous years. However, what has been worrying the Health Department officials is that majority of the cases reported in March were indigenous—infection originated in the district/State itself. Usually, 98 per cent of malaria cases reported in the State are ‘imported.’ However, the Health Department’s worry now is the local spread from these ‘imported’ cases. The district health officials said that specific campaign to tackle malaria would be launched soon.
