Man throws infant daughter into well

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A four-day-old baby girl was killed by her father, who threw the newborn into a well at Choolaimedu here early on Friday.

J. Niranjan Kumar (28), a software engineer, who did not want to have children, dropped the infant in the narrow well that had 20 feet of dirty water.

Police sources said Niranjan, a postgraduate in engineering, married B. Sangeetha (22) of Villivakkam in February last year. He was working in Bangalore. When Sangeetha informed her husband that she had conceived, Niranjan asked her to get the pregnancy aborted.

However, the woman did not go in for an abortion and was delivered of a girl baby in a private hospital early this week.

Niranjan took his wife and the baby to his house at Gill Nagar. At about 3 a.m., neighbours heard a thud in the backyard of his house. When Sangeetha and others rushed out, Niranjan said he had dumped the child in the unused well. The police arrested the accused, who admitted to having committed the murder. Fire service personnel recovered the body.

“There is clear circumstantial evidence of the involvement of the accused in the murder. Though he had a cruel intention to kill the baby, he showed no sign of it till the last minute. Niranjan has been remanded to judicial custody,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Triplicane) M.T. Ganesamoorthy said.
