Plan to showcase Tamil Nadu tourism

HYDERABAD: Tamil Nadu Tourism Department has launched new initiatives to promote adventure tourism and lesser known tourist spots.

Disclosing this to mediapersons here on Friday as part of a road show, Tourism and Culture secretary V. Irai Anbu and Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director M.Rajaram described Tamil Nadu as an all-season destination with varied attractions. About one-fourth of total domestic tourists to Tamil Nadu were from Andhra Pradesh, they added.

Yelagiri Hill, Kolli hills, Valparai, Top slip, Thirukadayur temple, Tarangam-badi, Pulicat lake on Tamil Nadu-Andhra border, Kutrala waterfalls were among 18 identified lesser known places to be developed with all amenities, said Dr. Anbu.

Mr. Rajaram said the economic slow down did not impact tourist arrivals in Tamil Nadu which has everything for every tourist- beaches, temples, wildlife, waterfalls, hill stations, monuments, architecture, handicrafts including five Unesco declared heritage sites like Mamallapuram, Thanjavur, Nilgiris mountain rail.

In fact the number of foreign arrivals in 2008 was 20.4 lakh as against 16.25 lakh in 2007 and domestic tourists rose to 6.25 crore from 5.5 crore of previous year, he said.

Specially trained tourist friendly auto-rickshaw drivers, TTDC tour packages, rail cum road tours covering major tourist destinations, ‘Hop-on Hop-off’ Chennai-Mammalapuram, Chennai city tour were others popular facilities. The department also started ‘Bed and Breakfast’ facilities in 72 houses in different locations in the State recently, he added.

AP Tourism Development Corporation Executive Director K. Ramana Reddy said they had launched several packages from Tamil Nadu into Andhra including temple tour packages from Chennai to Srisailam, Ahobilam, Mahanandi.
