Kerala standoff over, says Raja

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The standoff between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India over sharing of seats in Kerala eased with the announcement in the State that the contentious Ponnani Lok Sabha seat would be part of the CPI quota.

“Since Ponnani has been accepted to be part of the four seats for the CPI, the issue has been resolved. Rest of the issues will be discussed by the State units,” CPI national secretary and MP, D. Raja told The Hindu. He said this after meeting CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat here on Friday after reports from Kerala suggested that the CPI threatened to contest most of the 20 seats in case Ponnani was not declared to be part of the allotment.

Asked whether the candidate would contest on a party symbol or otherwise, Mr. Raja said all issues would be discussed by the State units. It would be party’s prerogative to select the candidate
