Seven colleges have been shifted, says spokesperson Datta
Party demands that order be rescinded immediately

BANGALORE: Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs will stage a demonstration in front of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s residence here on Monday in protest against the Government’s decision to shift colleges from their constituencies.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, JD(S) spokesperson Y.S.V. Datta said the BJP Government in the State had shifted seven colleges situated in Assembly constituencies represented by JD(S) MLAs to constituencies represented by BJP MLAs.

Accusing the Government of resorting to favouritism and political vendetta, Mr. Datta said the BJP Government’s decision also violated the model code of conduct. “Though the order was issued on Friday (March 13), it has been dated March 2 to avoid attracting the provisions of the model code of conduct,” Mr. Datta said.

Claiming that all the seven colleges, which are being wound up and shifted to other constituencies, had a good student strength, Mr. Datta said the Government’s decision was totally unjustified. Moreover, the students who were studying in these colleges would be put to a lot of hardship if the Government closed them.

He demanded that the Government immediately rescind the order as there was no reason for the authorities to close down the colleges. “You can’t close down the colleges just because they are situated in constituencies represented by the JD(S),” he said.

All the seven MLAs from whose constituencies the colleges have been shifted will participate in the protest along with other party workers, he said.

Responding to queries, Mr. Datta said the party would finalise its list of candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls by March 20.

On the prime ministerial candidate of the Third Front of ten parties, including the JD(S), Mr. Datta said the issue would be resolved during the March 15 meeting convened by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in New Delhi.
