Bhajan Lal’s son ‘divorces’ his second wife

Special Correspondent

Chand Mohammed

CHANDIARH: The former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister, Chand Mohammed aka Chander Mohan, is understood to have ‘divorced’ his second wife, Fiza aka Anuradha Bali, “telephonically and through SMS” from the United Kingdom. The couple had remained married for three months after converting to Islam.

Ms. Fiza told the electronic media at Mohali near here on Saturday that her husband, who had been missing since January 28, telephoned her on Friday night and uttered the word ‘talaaq’ (divorce) thrice. He also conveyed the message through SMS.

Mr. Mohammed, sitting Congress MLA from Kalka and son of the former Haryana Chief Minister, Bhajan Lal, “deserted” his first wife, Seema Bishnoi, and two children on Diwali night last year. He resurfaced in December 2008 after 40 days with a new identity and a new wife and was immediately “disowned” by the Bhajan Lal family. He was also dismissed as Deputy Chief Minister.

Fiza sacked

Ms. Fiza, before her conversion to Islam, was posted as Assistant Advocate-General, Haryana, but she was sacked for not attending office.

Ms. Fiza, filed a police complaint against her ‘estranged’ husband with the Mohali police and even moved the Punjab Human Rights Commission seeking justice. She levelled charges of rape, cheating, intimidation and hurting religious sentiments against him. However, the police recently gave a clean chit to Mr. Mohammed.

Mr. Fiza said she was contemplating moving the court.

Not acceptable

She told the media that “divorce” in this manner was not “acceptable” as per Islamic conventions and she had already consulted Supreme Court lawyers and Muslim clerics in this regard.

She also denied having received from Mr. Mohammed two demand drafts towards “mehr” of Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 15,000 as three months’ maintenance expenses.
