Flower carnival to focus on value addition

Special Correspondent

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Efforts are being made to give a touch of novelty to the 2009 Annual Floral Carnival at the Government Botanical Garden here. Director of Horticulture B. Chandramohan told reporters here on Saturday that the carnival was likely to be conducted on May 23 and 24. This time, the focus would be on value addition. He said hawkers would be kept out of the venue. The possibility of reviving the market shows, which were conducted along with the flowers shows, would also be explored. The annual fruit show would be conducted at the Sim’s Park at Coonoor in the last week of May. The number of days would be decided later. Since the vegetable show, organised for the first time at Kotagiri last year, was a runaway success, it would get more importance this time round.

The dates would be finalised soon, he said.A management plan was being evolved for the gardens maintained by the Department of Horticulture in the Nilgiris.

It would contain a comprehensive plan for each garden, he said.

The Centenary Rose Park here and the Sim’s Park were being expanded.

Earlier, Mr. Chandramohan presided over a review meeting.
