UDUPI: Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Gopal B. Hosur said on Monday that 27 persons had been arrested in connection with the group clashes that took place in Kaup on Sunday. Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Hosur said the accused had been remanded to judicial custody till March 28 and had been shifted to Mangalore jail. Two cases had been registered in connection with the Kaup group clashes. The situation in Kaup was peaceful and under control. Police patrolling had been intensified in all sensitive areas. Nearly 12 platoons of the Karnataka Reserve Police and the District Armed Reserve had been deployed in Kaup. Mr. Hosur said the group clash at Kaup could have been prevented had the Circle Police Inspector and Sub-Inspector been there. But they were deployed for duty at the Hindu Samajotsava function in Mangalore on Sunday. Mr. Hosur said some miscreants had damaged a fan and a water tank at a place of worship at Uppunda near Byndoor on Sunday night. A copy of a holy book was missing. A case had been registered and investigations were on. No one had been arrested in connection with the Uppunda incident, he said. MeetingEarlier, participating in the peace committee meeting here, Mr. Hosur said stern action would be taken against the accused involved in Kaup group clashes. If innocent persons had been arrested by the police, it would be investigated and their names would be removed from the charge sheet. Places of worship should not be used for any purpose other than religious activities. Youth Peace Committees would be formed in all police stations. President of Udupi District Congress M.A. Gafoor said police security was lax in Kaup leading to the group clash. Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Lalaji Mendon said the police should release an innocent person Muneef Benegre arrested on Sunday. The group clashes appeared to be carefully planned. All communities should teach tolerance to their youth, he said. President of District Janata Dal (S) Deviprasad Shetty said minority communities had shown restraint despite grave provocations in Kaup and surrounding areas. Secretary of Kaup Kshetra Muslim Okkoota B.A. Moidinabba said on Monday that the behaviour of miscreants and the police personnel at Kaup, where group clashes took place, smacked of highhandedness and hurt the sentiments of a community. Mr. Moidinabba showed the damage to a place of worship following stone-throwing during the group clashes. Glass pieces and stones were found strewn there. Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Moidinabba said the miscreants had entered a place of worship when devotees were offering prayers. What had hurt the sentiments of the community was that the police and miscreants entered the place of worship with their shoes on, he said.
