Palam-Dwarka flyover claims one more life

Staff Reporter

In all, eight people have been killed on the flyover

“Most accidents have taken place because of over-speeding”

“DDA to put rumble strips that will act as a speed controller”

NEW DELHI: The “jinxed” Palam-Dwarka flyover in the Capital claimed yet another life in the early hours of Monday, the latest being a 25-year-old video-grapher. In all, eight people have been killed in road accidents on the flyover in the past few days.

Central verge

The accident took place when Shrikant Bhushan and his colleague Mohit, a photographer, were returning on a motorcycle from an assignment in Mahavir Enclave. They were on the Palam-Dwarka flyover when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it rammed into the central verge around 2 a.m., the police said.

The two fell on the road and sustained serious injuries. The police rushed them to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital where Shrikant, a resident of Dabri, was declared dead on arrival. Mohit, a resident of Bindapur, was admitted to the hospital from where he was discharged in the evening.

Two days ago, 22-year-old motorcyclist Chinlein Sanj was killed as he fell from the flyover after hitting the railing. On March 11, a young couple and their two children were killed in a similar accident when they were on their way to a temple on a motorcycle. The motorcycle rammed into the railing and all the four fell down from the flyover. The same day, 30-year-old Jagmohan was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle and fell on the road. On March 8 morning another young man named Malli Babu, who was from Visakhapatnam, was killed in an accident on the flyover.

Barricades installed

In the wake of the accidents, the traffic police had on Sunday installed barricades to reduce the speed of vehicles. They also carried out a drive against over-speeding and other traffic rule violations on that stretch and issued about 100 challans.

Fatal accidents

“Most accidents have taken place apparently because of over-speeding,” said a police officer. Three of the fatal accidents reported since March 8 have taken place between pole Nos. 17 and 18 of the flyover.

The Delhi Development Authority on Friday sent a manager along with an engineer to conduct a survey of the stretch that is being termed “faulty”. The DDA has decided to put rumble strips on the flyover that will act as a speed controller.
