New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday posted for final hearing in July appeals filed by actor Kushboo against a Madras High Court judgment directing the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore in Chennai to conduct a joint trial of the 23 defamation complaints filed in various places in Tamil Nadu against her for alleged remarks on pre-marital sex. The Supreme Court in May 2008 had stayed the High Court judgment dated April 30, 2008 which ordered consolidation of all cases for a joint trial and to dispose of the complaints in six months. On Monday, a Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice V.S. Sirpurkar and Justice P. Sathasivam after hearing counsel Pinky Anand for Ms. Kushboo posted the matter for final hearing in July. The petitioner said that ‘India Today’ magazine conducted a survey in September 2005 on the subject ‘pre-marital sex’ in big cities. She had expressed her views regarding the need for teaching sexology to the younger generation either in educational institutions or by their parents. Objecting to her statement in the magazine, 23 complaints were filed against her to harass and victimise her.
